A Letter to Our Neighbors, from Board Member Millie Tyler

Board member Millie Tyler has asked us to publish this letter to the neighborhood, in light of some recent conflict and rumors. Hopefully this will help resolve the issue and put an end to the contention, so we can all get back to working together as a community and treating each other as neighbors.

Neighbors,

You elected me to hear and represent you, and I hear you loud and clear: no homeowner should be subject to any fines, fees, or assessments for accounts other than their own. I am sorry if anyone has been given any impression otherwise.

In accordance with our covenants, assessments may be charged to the individual accounts of homeowners who are in violation of the bylaws. To be absolutely clear, under the current Board of Directors, these homeowner's fines have never been, and will never be, paid from the HOA's budget. Those funds belong to the homeowners. To pay an individual's assessments from those funds would, in essence, mean the whole neighborhood pays towards issues that are not their responsibility.

A bit of background on the assessments in question: due to a conflict with a former board member, assessments were wrongfully placed on my husband's and my account in 2021, not because of any covenant violation on our part, but solely because the board member had the power to do so. We have been contesting them ever since. To be clear, in the 17 years we’ve lived here, my husband and I have never been delinquent in paying our annual dues, nor have we ever received a fine for any covenant violation. These fraudulent assessments were only considered delinquent because we had contested them for so long. However, they are now paid, and if it helps in any way to sooth tensions in the community, it will be worth it.

One of the main reasons I ran for this board was to prevent this situation from happening to others in the future. The processes and procedures handed down to us from previous boards offer no protection or recourse to innocent homeowners who are targeted, or are wrongly charged assessments. While many assessments are valid, an unsettling number of assessments are not. However, it is difficult to address the changes our community needs while this entire issue is underscored by contention.

In an effort to further ease confusion, I would like to inform you that I have paid any and all fees levied against me, and my account balance is currently zero. While I am still certain that the fees were fraudulently and illegally applied to my account, peace of mind for my neighbors and my community is so much more important to me.

Now that this is behind us, it is my goal to be the last person to fall victim to this broken system. I am committed to making the necessary changes so none of my neighbors ever have to go through what I went through.

Best, Millie Tyler

I truly appreciate Millie's efforts to bring the community together, and I hope this helps to do just that.
